As your constituent and as someone who cares deeply about breast and cervical cancer, I urge you to restore current funding levels for the Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection (BCCED) Program.

Without reinstating the $400,000 allocated to the BCCED Program more women in Alabama will needlessly lose their lives. We owe it to the women of this great state to give them a fighting chance!

We understand the tough economic situation you face and the difficult decisions you must make. However, we respectfully ask that you take into consideration the 2,900 women diagnosed with breast cancer in Alabama in 2010, and the 700 that will lose their lives.

Early detection of breast cancer is a key to surviving the disease. Unfortunately, women with low incomes who are uninsured or underinsured - like those eligible for Alabama BCCED - are more likely to skip potentially life-saving cancer screenings, which leads to later diagnoses, larger tumors and lower survival rates. And without Alabama BCCED, many of these women will have nowhere else to go.
  
We request the state's budget cutters not choose to balance the budget by gambling that the state's uninsured and underinsured women will not develop cancer this year.
