As a breast cancer advocate, I am writing you to express my concern about the recently announced cuts to the Every Woman Counts program, which provides screening services for low-income and uninsured California women. The program is a vital safety net for our state's neediest women.

Unfortunately, the Every Woman Counts program will close the program to all new enrollments for breast cancer screening services for the first six months of next year. And once the doors reopen next summer, only women age 50 and above will be served. These decisions significantly reduce the number of women in the state who will have access to affordable breast cancer screenings.

We understand the tough economic situation you face and the difficult decisions you must make. However, we respectfully ask that you take into consideration the 21,700 women diagnosed with breast cancer in California in 2009, and the 4,000 that will lose their lives.

Early detection of breast cancer is a key to surviving the disease. Unfortunately, women with low incomes who are uninsured or underinsured - like those eligible for Every Women Counts - are more likely to skip potentially life-saving cancer screenings, which leads to later diagnoses, larger tumors, and lower survival rates. And without Every Woman Counts, many of these women will have nowhere else to go.
  
Please stand with us to make sure every California woman counts! I urge you to reach out to the state Department of Public Health to reconsider their new policy decisions. Governor, women's lives are at risk.
