In Arizona, there is a significant difference in the coverage insurance companies provide for orally administered anti-cancer medications versus coverage for traditional intravenous treatments.

That means the out-of-pocket costs to cancer patients for an oral drug can be significantly higher than what they would pay for a traditional intravenous treatment.

Right now Senate Bill 1216 is before the Arizona Legislature. This bill would require health insurance plans to cover the cost of oral chemotherapy without increasing patients' out-of-pocket costs.

Health decisions should be made between a patient and his or her doctor. Treatment options are both personal and medical - they should not have to be based on financial factors.

Please support SB 1216, which will require health insurance plans to cover the cost of oral chemotherapy without increasing patients' out-of-pocket costs. Orally administered anti-cancer medications are becoming an attractive treatment option for many patients - but health insurance practices lag behind the state of the science. There can be a significant difference in the amount many cancer patients in the U.S. must pay out-of-pocket for an oral drug and how much they pay for an intravenous product. This bill is an important first step in making sure there is no distinction between different forms of life-saving drugs in the fight against cancer and to decrease the out-of-pocket cost to Arizona cancer patients receiving oral chemotherapy.
