Support mammography coverage for Colorado women over the age of 40!

Current Colorado law could allow insurance companies to deny coverage of mammography for women age 40 to 49.

There is a piece of legislation being considered in the Colorado State Senate that attempts to correct this issue; however, it does not offer enough protections for women. The current legislation may leave barriers in place by extending coverage only to women who are "at risk."

Susan G. Komen would like to see House Bill 1252 amended to include "all individuals over 40 years of age" and individuals at risk should be covered so that they have the opportunity to make their own decisions about whether a screening mammogram is right for them.

Current Colorado law could allow insurance companies to deny coverage of mammography for women age 40 to 49.

Decisions regarding mammography must include an evaluation of the benefits and risks, as well as a consideration of patient preference!

Clinical and patient groups like Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the American Cancer Society, and the American Society of Clinical Oncologists continue to recommend annual mammography beginning at age 40 for women at average risk and earlier for women with known risks for breast cancer.

HB 1252 attempts to correct this issue; however, it does not offer enough protections for women.  The current legislation leaves barriers in place by extending coverage only to women who are "at risk."

We urge you to support an amended version of HB 1252 to ensure all Colorado women age 40 and older have access to mammography.
