The Results Are in – Now We Need to Share Them with Congress

Last week, Komen advocates voted for the top health care reforms that could help ease the burden for people battling cancer. The results are in, and now we need your help to make sure Congress addresses our top priorities, including:

No one should be denied health insurance because of a pre-existing condition like cancer;
People with pre-existing conditions or those in poor health should not have to pay higher premiums for health insurance; and
Annual or lifetime caps on health insurance benefits should be eliminated.

As your constituent and a strong advocate in the fight against cancer, I urge you to consider cancer in any health reform bill you vote on this session.

Cancer patients and survivors have some of the most difficult experiences with our health care system, at a time in their lives when they are most vulnerable. And I want you to make sure the needs of cancer patients and survivors are addressed in the health reform debate.

I took part in an online poll sponsored by the Susan G. Komen for the Cure(R) Advocacy Alliance, which gave me the opportunity to rank the cancer care priorities that should be at the top of your list of priorities. More than 6,921 advocates shared their views.  We urge you to support our top health care priorities that will help ease the burden for people battling cancer:

* No one should be denied health insurance because of a pre-existing condition like cancer;
* People with pre-existing conditions or those in poor health should not have to pay higher premiums for health insurance; and
* Annual or lifetime caps on health insurance benefits should be eliminated.

In addition, we believe patients should be protected from high out-of-pocket costs; there should be no co-pays or cost sharing for preventative or early detection services like mammograms; and there should be incentives to encourage primary care providers to work in underserved inner city and rural areas.

Cancer costs the U.S. $228 billion each year in medical costs and lost productivity. It claims more than 565,000 lives each year and inflicts incalculable physical pain and emotional distress on cancer patients and their families. We must take this opportunity to address the needs of cancer patients and survivors by making a strong investment in the fight against cancer.
