Good News in the Fight against Breast Cancer!

Recently, Governor Mitch Daniels made a strong commitment to fighting breast cancer, by signing into law Senate Bill 554 – legislation that allows any eligible woman in Indiana to be treated through the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention Program – regardless of where she is diagnosed.

As a citizen of Indiana and an advocate for women impacted by breast cancer, I want to thank you for supporting SB 554 - a bill which expands Medicaid coverage for breast cancer treatment and will help save lives and ensure a better quality of health for Indiana women.

Previously, if a woman was screened outside of the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention Program she was denied immediate access to Medicaid funded treatment. SB 554 corrected this flaw by making Indiana's Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention Program less restrictive and allowing any provider to screen women for breast and/or cervical cancer and, if cancer is diagnosed, allow these women access to Medicaid through the BCCP Treatment Act.  
 
In Indiana, 13,019 women will receive a breast cancer diagnosis this year, and it is estimated that 900 of those women will die from the disease. The passage and signing into law of SB 554 will help improve the odds and save the lives of hundreds of disadvantaged Indiana women.
