Urge Congress to Invest in Cancer Funding and Research!

Recently, President Obama pledged to launch an effort to seek out the cures to cancer in our time. Now as Congress develops the federal budget for the coming fiscal year, our elected officials have a unique opportunity to fulfill that promise.

To truly make an impact in the war on cancer, Congress must make permanent the research funding provided for in the economic recovery legislation, and increase funding for early detection and patient navigation programs.

As your constituent, I want you to ensure funding for cancer research and cancer control programs is a priority in FY2010.

President Obama declared his commitment to reignite the war against cancer and seek the cures for this deadly disease in our lifetime during his recent address to a joint session of Congress. And he is backing his pledge by proposing an increased investment in public health programs and in cancer research at the National Institutes of Health.

We urge you to listen to the millions of cancer survivors in the U.S. who want the FY2010 budget to reflect your commitment to the fight against cancer. The support you provided for cancer research and prevention programs in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the FY2009 omnibus represented the first increase after five years of stagnant funding - and is a critical element to discovering and delivering the cures for cancer.  But we must maintain our commitment.

I am calling for you to support the following funding requests in the FY2010 budget:

*National Institutes of Health (NIH): $33.3 billion (up $3 billion or 10 percent over FY 2009)

*National Cancer Institute (NCI): $6 billion (up $1 billion or 20 percent over FY 2009), in keeping with the level for cancer funding in President Obama's FY 2010 Budget Request

*Food and Drug Administration (FDA): $2.250 billion (up $210 million or 10 percent over FY 2009)

*National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program: $250 million (up $44 million over FY2009), an increase - but still leaving a sizable gap in the number of eligible women who can be screened by the program

*Patient Navigator program: $18.6 million for the program housed in the Health Resources and Services Administration, funding that was authorized but never appropriated

We encourage you to ensure transparency in the funding process and commit additional resources to innovative early detection and translational research, as well as the development of public-private partnerships.

Cancer costs the U.S. $228 billion each year in medical costs and lost productivity. It claims more than 560,000 lives each year and inflicts incalculable physical pain and emotional distress on cancer patients and their families. An increased investment in the fight against cancer will provide short-term stimulus the economy needs today, while building a foundation for a healthier, more productive workforce in the future.
