Save women's lives in Missouri!

Right now, the state is slashing funding that is critical to saving women's lives in Missouri.

The Show-Me Healthy Women (SMHW) breast and cervical cancer screening program is currently at risk of losing critical funding. Without the State's contributions to general revenue, thousands of women will go without access to vital early detection services and necessary treatment – but there's something you can do.

I am writing as your constituent and as someone who cares deeply about our state's commitment to fight breast and cervical cancer.

I am asking Governor Nixon and the state legislature to ensure there are NO CUTS IN APPROPRIATIONS to the requested $500,000 in funding for the Show-Me Healthy Women (SMHW) breast and cervical cancer screening program.

Last year, SMHW lost its one time supplemental funding of $500,000 and effected thousands of women between 40 and 49.  The core budget request of $500,000 must be maintained or thousands more women between 50 and 64 will lose access and be put at risk. Under current law, women over the age of 40 must be screened through the SMHW or the MoHealthNet program to be eligible for Medicaid-covered treatment. At current funding levels, the SMHW program screens less than 11 percent of the eligible population.  With the cuts, even fewer women will have access to these potentially life-saving services.

Any reduction in general revenue funding for SMHW that approved by you and your colleagues in the legislature will result in thousands of Missouri women who will not have access to the cancer screening that may well save their lives and may not be eligible for Medicaid-covered treatment.  This situation cannot be ignored.  Delays in diagnosis and treatment can, and will, affect chances of survival for these women. I urge you to speak to Representative Allen Icet and strongly request that the $500,000 budget request for SMHW be restored in full to the appropriations bill and by doing so show that you stand up for the grandmothers, mothers, sisters and daughters of our state.
