They're discussing the challenges facing their states and key funding priorities for the upcoming year. And, with states facing historic deficits, many governors across the country are considering drastic cuts to breast cancer screening programs, putting women's lives at risk.

As your constituent and an advocate against breast cancer, I am writing on behalf of all women and families affected by breast cancer in our communities, and to express my strong support for the breast cancer screening program for low-income and uninsured women in our state. Too many of our mothers, wives, sisters, friends, and neighbors are facing lay-offs, foreclosures, loss of health insurance and uncertainty.

In these tough times, our state screening program provides a life-line to those in need. That's why it is vital that we protect funding for this program in next year's budget.

As you know, next to skin cancers, breast cancer is the second-most frequently diagnosed cancer among women and is second only to lung cancer in cancer deaths among women. Yet when breast cancer is detected early, before it spreads beyond the breast, the 5-year relative survival rate is 98 percent: once the cancer spreads, survival rates plummet to 23 percent. Without the assistance of early detection programs, many underserved women will delay recommended screenings, leading to later diagnoses, larger tumors at diagnosis, fewer treatment options and lower chances for survival.

I respectfully request that you help ensure the state's budget for fiscal year 2011 contains the critical funding needed to help save women's lives.
