The NY State Legislature and Governor have slashed funding for the Cancer Services Program by 33% since 2008 – a program that is critical to saving women's lives in New York.

The Cancer Services Program provides breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening to under and uninsured patients – men and women. In the Deficit Reduction bill, passed in December 2009, an additional $1 million cut in funding for this vital program was be made, on top of an $8 million cut already suffered by the program in the 2009-10 budget. Now an additional cut is proposed in the SFY 2010-11 budget. That's why we need your help.

Please, write your state leaders now and tell them to protect funding for this critical program as they work to enact the 2010-2011 State budget. The women of New York cannot afford any more cuts to this life saving program. It's easy to do, just fill out the form below:

As your constituent and as someone who cares deeply about breast and cervical cancer, I am asking our state government to protect funding for the Cancer Services Program in the 2010-2011 state budget. Early detection actually saves New York $40 million per year in medical costs, so these recent program cuts are short-sighted and will be more costly in the long run. The women of New York cannot afford any more cuts to this life saving program.

The Cancer Services Program has been providing vital screening services to New Yorkers for 20 years and provided 80,500 people with cancer screening last year.  But, this is only 20% of the eligible population that could be receiving these life saving screenings. As more people lose their jobs and health coverage in this recession, the demand for cancer screening for the uninsured grows tremendously.

As you may know, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in U.S. women. Last year, 13,310 New York women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 2,650 New York women lost their battle with the disease.

Combined cuts to the Cancer Services Program in the SFY 2009-10 budget and  deficit reduction measures effectively slash this program's budget by 30% and additional cuts are proposed for this year. While everyone understands the budget is tight, this program has suffered more than its fair share.
