Save women's lives in New York!

Right now, the state is slashing funding that is critical to saving women's lives in New York.

The Cancer Services Program provides breast, cervical, and colorectal cancer screening to under and uninsured patients. But, under the current state budget funding for this vital program will be cut by over $8 million. That's why we need your help.

As your constituent and as someone who cares deeply about breast and cervical cancer, I am asking our state government to reverse the $8.3 million reduction in funding for the Cancer Services Program.

The Cancer Services Program has been providing lifesaving screening services to New Yorkers for 20 years and provided 80,500 people with cancer screening last year. As more people lose their jobs and health coverage in this recession, the demand for cancer screening for the uninsured grows tremendously.

As you may know, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in U.S. women.  Last year, 13,310 New York women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 2,650 New York women lost their battle with the disease.

Last year the Cancer Services Program received $29 million to provide critical screening services -- but for FY 2009-10, the Governor's budget proposes only $20.7 million in funding.  This will mean dramatic cuts to services to the uninsured of New York State - putting thousands of women at risk.
