I am writing to ask that you use your position in Congress to declare war on one of the nation's biggest killers.

Forty percent of Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes - there is hardly a family who hasn't been touched by this disease. It will claim more than half a million lives this year, roughly 1,500 people every single day.

Even before his heartbreaking cancer diagnosis, Senator Edward Kennedy, along with Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, were working together on comprehensive cancer legislation to redouble the nation's commitment to fighting all types of cancer. The Senate HELP Committee held a hearing on May 8 titled, 'Cancer: Challenges and Opportunities in the 21st Century.' The bill, which will be introduced soon, takes ambitious steps to increase investment in research; remove barriers that currently hinder progress in cancer research; improve early detection and treatment; and close gaps in access to care.

Investment in Cancer Research: More federal funding is the key to identifying treatments and getting them to patients' bedsides as quickly as possible. It is also critical to remove barriers that hinder our progress in cancer research and treatment.
 
Early Detection and Treatment: Early detection is the closest thing we have to a cure. Imagine the kind of progress where early detection is as easy as a blood test and treatment as non-invasive as an injection - it's within our grasp.

Access: Uninsured cancer patients are 60 percent more likely to die than those with health care coverage. We must close the gap, so that everyone facing this disease has access to early detection tools and treatment options. Otherwise, as the science surges, the gaps will only widen.

A few weeks ago, there was a great outpouring of affection for Senator Kennedy following the revelation that he has a malignant brain tumor. What better way to honor Senator Kennedy than to pass the anti-cancer legislation that he has co-authored?
