Dear friend,

As a Komen Advocate, you are great at contacting your lawmakers about important breast cancer legislation. Now, we have an opportunity for you to do even more!

We need your help to gather petition signatures at the Komen New York City Race for the Cure®.

On September 13, tens of thousands of survivors and activists from our area will put their running shoes on to fight breast cancer. We need dedicated volunteers to gather petition signatures in support of health care reform that considers the needs of people battling cancer.

When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 11-13 – At Advance Registration and at the Komen New York City Race for the Cure®.

Where: New York Hilton (September 11 & 12); Central Park (September 13)

Time:

  • September 11: 9:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. (shifts of 4 hours) – New York Hilton
  • September 12: 9:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (shifts of 4 hours) – New York Hilton
  • September 13: 7:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (shifts of 2.5 hours) – Central Park

Training: There will be a short telephone conference call training session offered the week of September 8. Details will be sent to those who volunteer.

This is a very LIMITED OPPORTUNITY so don't hesitate. If you can't make it, but would like to be involved, let us know, we're always looking for volunteers to help with other events and activities.

Q. What will I be doing?
A. Asking people to sign petitions supporting health care reform and specifically calling for provisions that address the unique needs that cancer patients and their families face as they battle this disease.

Specifically we are calling for health care that:

  • Ensures access to affordable, high quality health care for all, including people with "pre-existing" conditions such as cancer.
  • Increases the investment in early detection state programs for the medically under-served. In New York State, our program has suffered severe cuts that are causing a substantial decrease in breast health screening for uninsured women over 40 years of age.
  • Protects cancer patients from excessive out-of-pocket costs and lifetime or annual benefit limits.
  • Enhances the quality and value of health care by focusing on prevention, wellness, and chronic disease.

Q. Where will I be doing this?
A. You could be at the New York Hilton where thousands of race participants come to pre-register and pick up their t-shirts for the Race on September 11 and 12. Or you could be participating in our exciting Komen New York City Race for the Cure® in Central Park on Sunday, September 13, mingling with the crowds and asking people to sign the petition.

Q. What will I need to bring?
A. You will not need to bring anything with you except your passion for change!

Q. May I bring a friend?
A. Yes, ask friends, family and coworkers to volunteer with you.
